How to Patch Small Wall Holes So You Can Paint in 30 Minutes

Sometimes, patching small wall holes can feel like it takes longer than it should.

Holes from picture frames, wall décor, or mounted items are common in just about every home. The repair itself is usually small, but the drying time can slow everything down when all you want to do is get the wall painted and move on.

In this project, Jacob Dostaler, The Creative Repairman, shows the method he prefers for patching small wall holes because it dries quickly and lets you paint sooner. For simple touch-ups like this, that faster turnaround can make a big difference.

Tools and Materials Needed for Small Wall Hole Repair

Before getting started, Jacob keeps the repair simple with a few basic tools and materials.

  • Lightweight spackling is what he prefers for this kind of repair because it dries quickly. For small wall holes, that means the patch can often be ready to paint in about 30 minutes instead of taking much longer to dry.

  • A putty knife is used to apply the spackle and work it into the hole so it fills properly.

  • A scraper or the edge of the knife helps remove any loose paint or raised material around the hole before patching.

  • A damp paper towel is useful for smoothing the patch while it is still wet, which can help avoid sanding later.

  • Paint is the final step once the patch has dried and the wall is ready to be touched up.

How the Small Wall Holes Were Patched

Step 1: Scrape away anything loose around the hole

Before adding any patching material, Jacob scrapes around the hole to remove anything loose or raised above the surface. This gives the patch a cleaner area to bond to. If a little paint chips away during this step, that is fine, since the wall will be painted afterward.

Step 2: Press the lightweight spackle into the hole

Once the area is prepped, Jacob applies a small amount of lightweight spackle to the putty knife and works it into the hole. Instead of just covering the surface, he presses it in several times so the hole is filled more completely.

Step 3: Create a slight dimple and fill it again

Next, Jacob uses the back end of the knife to make a small dimple in the repair area. Then he goes back over it with more spackle. This helps the patch settle in and gives it a better surface to smooth out.

Step 4: Smooth the patch with a damp paper towel

After the hole is filled, Jacob uses a wet paper towel to smooth the patch while it is still workable. This helps flatten the surface and can make it possible to paint over the repair without needing to sand it first.

Step 5: Let it dry and paint over it

Once the patch is smooth, the last step is to let it dry. Because Jacob uses lightweight spackling, it can be ready to paint in about 30 minutes. That makes this method especially useful when the goal is to get the wall touched up without waiting around all day.

Why Repairs Like This Matter

Even small wall repairs can make a noticeable difference once they are done. Holes from old picture frames or wall décor may seem easy to overlook, but they can leave a wall looking marked up and unfinished. Once those spots are patched and ready for paint, the space feels cleaner, simpler, and more put together without requiring a major repair.

For Jacob, part of the appeal of this method is being able to move through the repair quickly and get the wall ready for paint sooner. That makes it a practical option for small touch-ups that do not need to drag into a longer project.

Here’s what the client had to say:

“We didn’t realize how much those little holes stood out until they were gone. Once everything was patched and painted, the wall looked clean again and the whole room felt more finished.”

It was a small repair, but it made the wall look finished again without turning the job into a drawn-out process.
